B-29 SUPER FORTRESS “FIFI” arrives at KDVT

On Sunday November 14th 2010, crowds wait at Deer Valley Airport (KDVT) for what is to be expected of a grand arrival. At 12 o’clock sharp I can hear a child in the background “There she is daddy”.  As I  look to the south and I can see “FIFI” turning to make her final approach to 25L. The vision of this B-29 Super fortress getting larger as it gets closer and Touchdown.

Airplane enthusiasts and history buffs will want to see three famous aircraft of World War II. The only flying B-29 in the world, The B-17 Flying Fortress, and B-25 Mitchell will be on display at the Deer Valley Airport at Cutter Aviation in Phoenix Nov. 14-18.

The Commemorative Air Force will be flying the B-29 Super fortress “FIFI” from a weekend event in Long Beach, Calif., and The Commemorative Air Force Arizona Wing Aviation Museum in Mesa will be flying their B-17 Flying Fortress “Sentimental Journey” and B-25 Mitchell “Maid in the Shade” in their efforts to “Honor our Arizona Veterans Past and Present.”

The three WWII bombers will arrive at the Deer Valley Airport at Cutter Aviation. at noon Nov. 14 and will be displayed until dusk. They will be on display from 9 a.m. to dusk Nov. 15-17, departing Nov. 18.

Tours and flight will be available on the B-29, B-17 and B-25.

The bombers are maintained and operated as a flying museum and memorial by the all-volunteer non-profit Commemorative Air Force. The B-29 is based in Midland, Texas, and is the only B-29 flying in the world. The B-17 and B-25 are maintained by the Arizona Wing Aviation Museum based in Mesa at Falcon Field Airport. The Arizona Wing members restored the WWII B-17 Flying Fortress “Sentimental Journey,” which is the most fully restored B-17 flying today. The Arizona Wing Aviation Museum in Mesa and its restored aircraft and artifacts span more than 90 years of aviation history.
