Deer Valley Spotting

By: Category: Deer ValleySpotting

Well, a few days ago Jason asked me to write something about a spotting location. Not wanting to run out of options for Sky Harbor, I decided on Deer Valley. Deer Valley is the 2nd busiest airport in the Valley, with just a few thousand operations less than Sky Harbor, it is also (according to some older statistics) the busiest GA airport in the nation. And I think it's a bit underrated in terms of spotting. The terminal building has a publicly accessible observation deck where photography is more than allowed, there's also 3 speakers to listen to different ATC frequencies, also, the first level area offers limited angles to get ground level photos of the planes parked on the transient ramp, as well as a restaurant (where I have yet to eat)...Read More

PHX Spotters day 2011 was a complete success. A couple weeks ago, Josh Akbar who is our Program Coordinator emailed me his thoughts about  having our first Phx Spotters Day event sometime during Memorial Weekend. So we came up with a couple of  ideas with our members and  decided to have it on Sunday, May 29th 2011.  Our first visit was to Sky Harbor International Airport (KPHX). We all decided to meet at the NW corner of T4. In attendance was Jason Bong, Josh Akbar, Felipe Garcia, Kyle Boyd, Ken Cheung, who flew in from Sacramento, CA, and Joe Kates, and member Ron. So after doing some spotting we moved to the SE corner to get some nice lighted arrival and departure shots. After about a hour of we decided to head over to Terminal 3 to catch the Hawaiian Airlines 767-300 (N590HA)...Read More

Last Tuesday, April 12, me and some friends traveled down to Deer Valley to watch Fifi, the only airworthy B-29 in the world. We woke up at 5 to get ready for the trip down from Prescott, breakfast and other preparations, and got to DVT around 8:30. Much to our disappointment, all the planes were late; we were informed that the B-17 and B-25 of the Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force were going to arrive between 10 and 10:30, and that the B-29, flown by the Texas wing, wouldn't make it until 11-12. This was a 2 to 3 hour delay from the originally published time. We then headed to the terminal building to ask about the observation deck, and proceeded to the deck to watch planes for a while and to see the WWII planes land...Read More

The vision of this B-29 Super fortress getting larger as it gets closer and Touchdown. Airplane enthusiasts and history buffs will want to see three famous aircraft of World War II. The only flying B-29 in the world, The B-17 Flying Fortress, and B-25 Mitchell will be on display at the Deer Valley Airport at Cutter Aviation in Phoenix Nov. 14-18.
