Gene2_Jbong

Welcome to the Club Gene.

Phxspotters was out at Goodyear today and got to witness a 17 yr old take his first flight in a private airplane. All of Genes family blindfolded him and took him into the terminal and waited for the Cessna to arrive. The pilot of the Cessna was Bob May from goodyear who is also the manger of the  Control Tower out at Goodyear. They all loaded up in the Cessna 172 that is part of the Flying Ten Flying Club. I talked to Genes parents and they said theat he has wanted to be a Pilot since he was just a small child. Well Gene let us be the first to tell you Happy Birthday and we hope that all your dreams come true. We all need to remember that without young adults like you who want to go on and be a pilot the aviation community would slowly disappear.

July 2010 Featured Airport GYR

PhxSpotters is going to be doing a article every month starting in July. And this month we have picked Phoenix Goodyear (KGYR). We sometimes forget that all the good aviation pictures come from the huge international airports or the military bases but believe it or not there is  more interesting aircraft that fly in and out of KGYR that one would think. Sometimes they even fly in and dont fly out. Goodyear is home to Aero Turbine, Inc. which is a company that buys aircrafts and either recyles or refurbishes and re-sells them. Phoenix Goodyear Airport (IATA: GYR, ICAO: KGYR, FAA LID: GYR), formerly known as Goodyear Municipal Airport, is a public airport located one mile (2 km) southwest of the central business district of Goodyear, in Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. The facility was originally constructed during World War II as a naval air facility known as NAF Litchfield Park, then upgraded to naval air station status and renamed NAS Litchfield Park. Its primary role following the end of World War II was that of storage and preservation of obsolete or excess U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Coast Guard aircraft. In

Preserved Aircraft on Luke AFB taken during TITD 2009

In 1940, the U.S. Army sent a representative to Arizona to choose a site for an Army Air Corps training field for advanced training in conventional fighter aircraft. The city of Phoenix bought 1,440 acres (5.8 km2) of land which they leased to the government at $1 a year effective March 24, 1941. On March 29, 1941, the Del. E. Webb Construction Co. began excavation for the first building at what was known then as Litchfield Park Air Base. Another base known as Luke Field, in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, released its name so the Arizona base could be called Luke Field. Advanced flight training in the AT-6 began at Luke in June that same year. The first class of 45 students, Class 41 F, arrived June 6, 1941 to begin advanced flight training in the AT-6, although only a few essential buildings had been completed. Flying out of Sky Harbor Airport until the Luke runways were ready, pilots received 10 weeks of instruction and the first class graduated August 15, 1941. Capt. Barry Goldwater served as director of ground training the following year. During World War II, Luke was the largest fighter training base in the Air Corps, graduating more than 12,000

US Air Force jet crashes in California, March 26, 2009 Thumbnail

US Air Force jet crashes in California, March 26, 2009

An F-22A Raptor fighter jet, crashed in the Mojave Desert in the southwestern United States on Wednesday, according to officials. The airplane, which seats one person, crashed at approximately 10:30 am local time about 35 miles northeast of Edwards Air Force Base in California. The cause of the accident has not yet been ascertained, and the fate of the pilot is unknown. The jet was on a test mission when it crashed. The F-22 is a supersonic fifth-generation fighter jet. It was originally designed in the 1980s as a means of entering Soviet airspace and attacking Soviet bombers if they attempted a nuclear strike. After the Cold War ended, the jet was then used as a long-range fighter jet. The jet was part of the 412th Test wing's 411th test squadron. This is the second crash involving a F-22. The first crash took place in Dec of 2004 at Nellis AFB, the fleet was grounded while the Air Force conducted a review of the F-22 program. Todays crash could not have come at a worse time for the current F-22 Program, as President Obama and the Defense department are reviewing future funding of the F-22 program. The Air Force believes it needs 381 F-22

RED FLAG is an advanced aerial combat training exercise hosted at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada and Eielson Air Force Base Alaska. Since 1975, air crew from the United States Air Force (USAF) and other U.S. military branches and allies take part in the exercises, each of which is six weeks in duration. The Red Flag exercises, conducted in four-to-six cycles a year by the 414th Combat Training Squadron of the 57th Wing, are very realistic aerial war games. The purpose is to train pilots from the U.S., NATO and other allied countries for real combat situations. This includes the use of "enemy" hardware and live ammunition for bombing exercises within the Nevada Test and Training Range. The mission of the 414th Combat Training Squadron (Red Flag) is to maximize the combat readiness and survivability of participants by providing a realistic training environment and a forum that encourages a free exchange of ideas. To accomplish this, combat units from the United States and its allied countries engage in realistic combat training scenarios carefully conducted within the Nellis Range Complex. The Nellis Range complex is located northwest of Las
