The first of two summer Red Flag exercises was held at Nellis Air Force Base in the Nevada desert from July 10th to 28th. This iteration of Flag (RF 17-3) is the one RF training event of the year to have no foreign participation. One of the biggest take-aways from this exercise was the ability to integrate four different fifth-generation platforms into a Red Flag exercise.

Air to Air Fights where others go on holiday at Las Palmas Airport in the Canary Islands!

DACT – Dissimilar Air Combat Training is a yearly exercise of the Spanish Air Force which took place in 2017 from 13th January to 27th January at Gando, the military part of the Las Palmas airport on the Canary Islands.

The DACT exercises of the Spanish Air Force have a long tradition and took place in the last years usually in the early beginning of the year. The exercise focuses like the title suggests on Dissimilar Air Combat Training. Nowadays a lot of Air Forces use just a single aircraft type for Air Combat and most pilots have experience in fighting against aircraft of the same type they’re flying in. So there is always a challenge to fight against a different type. Today the Spanish Air Force utilized with the EF-18 Hornet and Eurofighter Typhoon two different types, making it easier to arrange DACT as with a single-fighter type force.

Red Flag is America’s premier training exercise for today’s warfighters. Originally developed to improve our nation’s air to air kill ratio during Vietnam, it has grown into much more than strictly air to air tactics.

Red Flag 17-2, which concluded March 10th, included allies such as Spain, Singapore, and the Netherlands. As with all Red Flags, integration is the name of the game at these exercises. The mission sets allow each nation participating to adapt to each other’s tactics, and to formulate the most effective way to eliminate the threats they face using all assets involved as a singular force. Exercise Pitch Black 2016 is a three week bi-annual multi-national large force employment exercise which was conducted from RAAF Base Darwin and RAAF Base Tindal from 29 July to 19 August 2016. Exercise Pitch Black is to Australia, what Red Flag is to the USA. Major exercises such as Pitch Black are essential in ensuring that the Air Force remains ready to respond to threats whenever the RAAF is required by the Australian Government.
