Thank you Southwest Airlines.

Phxspotters wants to thank Southwest Airlines for allowing us to get some photos at your Maintenance hanger. It was a lot of fun and it was great having your staff come out and ask us tons of questions. We were the ones who should have been asking all the questions. We look forward to next time. Phoenix Air Traffic Control Tower Tour

After my photo of lightning over Sky Harbor Airport was published on Airliners.net on August 29th, 2010, I received a very special email from the Air Traffic Manager of Phoenix Air Traffic Control Tower, Mr. Bob Whitworth. He has been a controller, supervisor, and manager at numerous facilities throughout the nation. After viewing the photo, he asked if I would like to tour the facility. Of course, I said yes! After arriving at the

Gene2_Jbong

Welcome to the Club Gene.

Phxspotters was out at Goodyear today and got to witness a 17 yr old take his first flight in a private airplane. All of Genes family blindfolded him and took him into the terminal and waited for the Cessna to arrive. The pilot of the Cessna was Bob May from goodyear who is also the manger of the  Control Tower out at Goodyear. They all loaded up in the Cessna 172 that is part of the Flying Ten Flying Club. I talked to Genes parents and they said theat he has wanted to be a Pilot since he was just a small child. Well Gene let us be the first to tell you Happy Birthday and we hope that all your dreams come true. We all need to remember that without young adults like you who want to go on and be a pilot the aviation community would slowly disappear.

KPHX Rail Construction

KPHX Rail Update

Well construction is going smoothly at Sky Harbor Airport. The picture above is some of the progress that has been completed. Studies show that automated trains are the most efficient way to move people through airports. The PHX Sky Train™ may potentially result in more than 20,000 fewer vehicles per day at the Airport - nearly 20 percent of a day's traffic - and significantly reduce curb congestion and pollution. Stage One of the PHX Sky Train will transport Airport visitors and employees between METRO light rail, east economy parking and Terminal 4, which serves 80 percent of Sky Harbor’s passengers. Construction will be complete in early 2013. Stage Two, which will continue through the Airport all the way to the Rental Car Center, will be up and running in 2020. A new

Monsoon at KPHX

Monsoon season in Phoenix

The photo of the lightning over PHX was taken on August 17th, 2010 at 7:49 PM, right at the height of the monsoon storm. This was my first attempt at shooting lightning, and out of the 90 or so photos that I took from this very shot, only 2 had lightning in them whatsoever. I believe that getting a nice shot of lightning is 90% luck, and 10% skill. After all, when the lightning really strikes, your camera is either not pointed at the sky or your are in between photos. But for this shot, I suppose I got lucky, as not only was my shutter open and was pointed in the right direction, the lightning bolt was the biggest one of the night, by far. The photo was taken at the north west corner of the Terminal 4 parking garage, 8th level. Photo was taken with a Canon EOS Rebel T1i, paired with an EFS
