Night Spotting at KPHX

By: Category: Uncategorized

After dropping a friend off at Sky Harbor, I decided to take a minute to snap some photos from Terminal 4. Shooting at night is completely different from daytime. With daylight, it’s a lot easier to capture the image you want, with night, a whole new set of challenges arise. With some photos taking up to 30 seconds to capture, everything has to go right in order to make that perfect shot. A steady tripod is a must and a wireless shutter release could also be a big help (I found that out the hard way). Although I didn’t get many usable photos, I definitely enjoyed the new experience and I plan on making more night trips out to Sky Harbor in the near future! Story and Photos by: Kyle BoydRead More

In the next couple months, the Valley of the Sun temperatures will be slowing coming down. And when the temperatures come down it make s for some outstanding Aviation Photography. The next couple weeks will be the start of my spotting season. We look forward to seeing all of the Aviation Spotters at our local airports. If you see someone with a camera don't be afraid to walk up to us and say hello. It is a great to be out at the airport taking pictures, but its better when you have great company. Read More

PHX Spotters day 2011 was a complete success. A couple weeks ago, Josh Akbar who is our Program Coordinator emailed me his thoughts about  having our first Phx Spotters Day event sometime during Memorial Weekend. So we came up with a couple of  ideas with our members and  decided to have it on Sunday, May 29th 2011.  Our first visit was to Sky Harbor International Airport (KPHX). We all decided to meet at the NW corner of T4. In attendance was Jason Bong, Josh Akbar, Felipe Garcia, Kyle Boyd, Ken Cheung, who flew in from Sacramento, CA, and Joe Kates, and member Ron. So after doing some spotting we moved to the SE corner to get some nice lighted arrival and departure shots. After about a hour of we decided to head over to Terminal 3 to catch the Hawaiian Airlines 767-300 (N590HA)...Read More

So what’s your angle?

About 2 years ago I picked up my first DSLR camera, and took it to one place I knew that I would get the most use and enjoyment out of it. So I hoped in my truck and headed to  Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (KPHX) and started clicking the shutter button on my Nikon D3000. There was not a care in the world about how my photos were going to turn out.  I just wanted to capture every aircraft that I saw on my camera. It was just over a year, when I decided to take my aviation photography more seriously. With the cost of gas going up, it was harder to get out to the surrounding Airports across the valley. That is when I decided to make all my photos count.  Now don't get me wrong I still take a massive amount of photos when I go out spotting...Read More
